Being a volunteer at the Habitat Home Improvement Outlet

Alright..We did the volunteer work there just because our business class- Leadership and Communication required us to do some service learning...And then a member in our class picked this program...

I thought it was like building house, but it wasn't, it asked us to move heave staff, destroy some furnitures, throw them away, and test some machines such as microwave (we saw an very old microwave there!!!! It was so interesting, and it seemed like being made in 1970s). We also made everything in that outlet organized because before we started our work there, the whole place just like a mass...a garbage storage...

I heard that the organization, Habitat for Humanity is really large, it's international! And the things they need to do is that, they sell the furnitures and household appliances which are donated by people. And then they use the money and some volunteers to build houses for the homeless, while the homeless person also need to participate in at less half of the building procedure.

Because of getting up late I didn’t have my breakfast. So I was really hungry in the noon. There I met another volunteer, who was not in our group, Marie. She works in Denver now and the reason why she came here to do this volunteer job because she thinks “the job is really fun”! At the noon she drove me to a nearby Burger King. We bought several burgers and cokes for our volunteers and then went back.

Some staffs are so heavy that I could hardly move them. We also moved some hexagonal bricks, it seemed not that heavy, but actually it was more than 40 pounds for each piece!

It lucky that I brought my camera so I could take a lot of pictures for our group…but the unfortunate thing was no one took photos for me T_T so sometimes I just asked them to take a photo for me…but not frequently, and in those photos I was really ugly..T_T

Today there were two things that struck my heart.

The first thing was, an old lady came to our outlet wanting to donate some boards and sticks. She brought a lot of them. She drove one SUV while her husband drove a van… and both of two cars were full of the staffs. However, Keith, a habitat staff, said almost all of the staffs were useless, we didn’t need them, and we would not take them. The old lady was very sad, she said “look at this, it is brand new!” “That is brand new, too!” many times. But Keith just ignored and said we didn’t want them and asked her to throw them away. At that time I saw the old lady was even going to cry. . She didn’t say anything anymore but just threw all the remained staffs back into her car, angrily. When I went and checked her in the car, she was crying. She said she was really mad at Keith. She really wanted to donate them. She drove quite a long way here. And if she recycle them, she would pay 50 dollars, and her family was really out of money right now!(美国回收垃圾还要收那么多钱。。哎~~) I said if I were Keith I would take them, because as she said, “they were really useful and I could do a lot of things with them all my life!” I said there should be someone else need them …I’m sure you can find other ways..She said her sister was an artistic; she could use them to do some creative work. ..Finally she thanked me for my care before she left. I was glad because I made her leave without anger.

Another thing which made me into crazy was that, the outlet asked us to destroy and throw away so many good things!!! It was so wasteful!!!Unbelievable! Because some cabinets were not problems at all! They were such good furnitures but we have to destroy them because nobody bought them! But think of those who want furnitures but cannot afford them…There are a lot of people who are in need of them! Why the outlet could not give those furnitures to those who really need them for free instead of asking us to destroy them and throw them as trashes???!!!

We worked from 9 am to 6pm today …Through the whole day work I was really tired, and exhausted. I felt like every piece of my body was hurt. But it was fun an interesting, and members in our group also knew each other better. It was really a good idea to do tough work together.

I'll put our photos here later, when I have time~
